Welcome Statement from
Fionn Kelly
Welcome to the Combat
Mission Headquarters, The Gamer's Net's newest section which is
dedicated to coverage of the innovative, upcoming wargame from Battlefront.com
entitled “Combat Mission”.
This section has only just
been created and will grow substantially over time to form, in
conjunction with The Gamer's Net's opponent finding and scenario
archive sections, a one stop shop for all things Combat Mission.
Combat Mission,
for those of you who are unaware of it, is a wargame featuring
simultaneous order resolution, truly functional three-dimensional
terrain and objects, some of the lushest graphics I've ever seen in a
wargame and all the hard core data and realism anyone could want. At
present it is nearing beta but the developers have kindly given Martin,
another alpha tester and my sworn PBEM foe, and myself permission to
play a PBEM game and post our after action reports here as we play each
turn along with screenshots to illustrate various important points or
just to show you things we think are “cool”.
We have been given a new
scenario which neither of us has seen before and individual briefings
and orders. I know what forces are at my disposal but almost nothing
about Martin's forces and, I presume, he is in a similar situation. One
of the most intriguing aspects of Combat Mission is its
handling of Fog of War which will, no doubt, be amply demonstrated
during this game. Since Fog of War will play such a pivotal part during
this PBEM game I will take the time to fully explain exactly how these Battle
Reports will be conducted.
After every turn Martin and
I will post our thoughts, plans, feelings and general fear about what
the hell is going on. We will post a few pictures to illustrate points
or show the aftereffects of battle. To keep the gaming experience pure
neither of us will be looking at the others Battle Reports or seeking
any information from anyone about what the enemy is up to.
This is not going to be a
dry report of a glorious past battle. This will be an insight into a
competitive struggle between two friendly adversaries who both want to
win fair and square. I can't stress enough how much better Combat
Mission is than any other recent tactical combat game at creating
a realistic level of Fog of War and it will be to everyone's benefit if
the full Fog of War is maintained in this game. The confusion and sheer
fear which builds up during a game of Combat Mission as
everything disintegrates around you and you STILL aren't sure exactly
how many enemy are firing on you and from where is thrilling.
I would ask that you all
respect this and ensure that you do not pass on any information to
either party which you have gleaned from reading their opponents Battle
Reports. E.g. If Martin has tanks worming through a wood on my left
flank and defeat is assured unless I shift forces to counter the move
this turn I don't want anyone posting that my left flank is weak and
that I MUST reinforce it now or else.
Martin and I are tied in
PBEM games won at the moment so we really are going to be competing as
well as sharing, with you all, an inside view of this unique and
excellent game and I know I'd rather lose fairly than win unfairly.
(Not that I intend to lose mind you ;-). )
One last thing, bear in
mind that this is an ALPHA of the game and as such there as still a few
bugs present and many cool things are constantly being added. The way
to interpret this scenario and what you see of CM during the game is to
realize that the gold version (the released game) will contain all the
things we can do in this version PLUS many, many more items which will
be added over the next weeks. For an alpha I find Combat Mission
to be remarkably stable and its very complete with an absolutely huge
list of US and German TO&E and options (as I'm sure will become
apart during gameplay) but its still an alpha so if we run into a bug
at some stage that's only to be expected. It's also a good sign since
it means you won't run into it in the released version ;-).
We will be visiting the Combat
Mission forums
at Battlefront.com regularly to answer questions about Combat
Mission (although you must bear in mind it is so vast that we are
constantly learning new facets of it) and to discuss how we feel we are
doing in the current PBEM game.
If this PBEM Battle Report
game goes well there may be more and so, without further ado, I will
provide the link to the Battle
Reports page from where you can access all our Battle Reports as we
write them.
Please feel free to send
your feedback to Fionn (fionnk@thegamers.net)
and Martin (gamesofwar@online.de
). I'm sure we'd all love to hear what you think about this and what
you'd like to see.
Yours,
Fionn Kelly.
