T Minus 4 hours EST

Well the first reports from overseas are in and the perceived threat of total failure is a complete washout.  So far the world is still spinning happily around the sun and life continues...Will keep you posted... ;-)

Now on to the update,  well unfortunately outside events have caused tonight's update to be a little sparse.  But we do have some new pictures for you to look at.  The existing Fog and Night pictures in the Screenshot Gallery were always a little dark so we have whipped up 3 brand spanking news ones.  These feature a foggy autumn night with some German armor for show...

Oh, by the way:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! 2000 here we come!!!

Thursday, December 30, 1999

It's the night before "THE NIGHT".  Got all of your bottled water and supplies put away?  Good,  take a break and join us as we got a few new things on this eve of the millennium.

What better way to get ready for the new year than watch Fionn lose a bunch of armored vehicles?  That's right,  turn 3 in the ongoing Last Defense AAR is now up for your perusal.  Movie files are included as usual.  Head over to the After Action Report section or use this handy dandy LINK.

Max Molinaro has been making us laugh for months with his hilarious pictures and today he sent me a new one which proves the age old axiom...Head over to his special spot in the Screenshot Gallery right HERE.

Don't forget to check our regular Quick Tactics feature in the New Features area and also check the Archive section for all of the older expired ones.

So you like those Arnhem pictures eh?  Well then,  you will be happy to know that we have thrown up another one.  You'll find it at the top of the Arnhem section in the newly remodeled Screenshot Gallery.  Follow this LINK to see it.

Also just in,  another in Fionns ongoing series of Artillery Quick Tactics has been posted in the New Features section index page.  Don't forget to look at the top of this page as well for a new Did You Know

HOT STUFF!!! This just in!  Steve Grammont (the pimp daddy at BTS) has posted two very interesting messages on the forum this evening.  One is a general update on Combat Mission's progress and the other talks about the feasibility of another Demo Scenario.  They are both re-printed HERE for your convenience.

21:30 EST

Good evening all.  Tonight has been a night for site maintenance and the section the got the biggest overhaul was the Screenshot Gallery.  Now for your convenience there is one single link that takes you to an index page which lists all the different categories of screenshots that we have available including:  Winter TerrainBritish Airborne TroopsNight and FogRunning AnimationsUrban Combat,  and the Max Molinaro and CoolcolJ galleries.  Whew!  Lots of good stuff in there and oh did we mention the new section?  No, well to celebrate this latest site upgrade we have 3 new shots taken from an ongoing Arnhem Operation fought by Wild Bill.  That's right we got some Red Devil action and it's all waiting for you in the Screenshot Gallery right HERE.

Also tonight,  another in Fionns ongoing series of Artillery Quick Tactics has been posted in the New Features section index page.

Remember to check out the Archives section for older Did You Know's and Quick Tactics both...

15:30 EST

Well we certainly hope that you have had a enjoyable Holiday weekend but now it's time to get back to work!

Coming right out of the gate are some new Movie Files.  That's right,  we now have both Allied and Axis movie files to go with Leland J. Tankersley's excellent After Action Report.  You can get to these movies through the After Action Report section right HERE.

Next up we cater to the StuG lover in all of us.  Check out a trio of StuG Studs in the newly opened Heroes Corner page 2!  It's getting mighty lopsided in there too,  are there no more American heroes out there?!?  Click on this LINK or the Nav-button above to be taken right there.

Be sure to check out the daily Quick Tactic in the New Features area!

16:45 EST

Ahhh,  the big day at last!  We hope that in whatever way you chose to celebrate the Holidays,  they are filled with joy and happiness!

Today,  we have a few more gifts for you to unwrap! We begin with our first ever Special Event!  We wanted to take a moment and thank Max Molinaro for his humorous and slightly bent Combat Mission screen shots so we have set up a little Art Show for Max and you can see some of his best work by following the Nav-button link above or by clicking HERE.

The scrolling Did You Know above mentions a very nice addition to Combat Mission and one which without the comprehensive full 3D environment would be very difficult to simulate.  The effect is known by many as 'Splash Damage' and put simply it is the effect of a nearby explosion or detonation on lightly armored vehicles and troops i.e. soft targets.  You can see a picture of this in action by clicking this LINK to a special screenshot.

Fionn 'Wittman' Kelly has been busy brushing up on his small unit armored tactics and has decided to share this knowledge with all of us.  We have just posted Fionn's wonderful article,  Movement to Contact: A Tank Platoon Tactics Primer.  This is an excellent read and will benefit both the Grognard and newbie alike!  Go to the Articles section above or just go ahead and click on THIS.

Be sure to check out the daily Quick Tactic in the New Features area!

Some site news for you to chew on.  The Heroes Corner section is now sporting a new look and this is just a hint of the new changes to come soon! Also you may notice that some of the Nav-buttons above have red borders.  That is a quick way to identify areas that have been recently updated!  One last thing,  we have seen many people talking about CMHQ in the various public forums and message boards.  We heartily thank you, however  when referencing our url address please use ONLY this one:  http://combathq.thegamers.net

While the address that you see in your browser window is slightly different (combathq.thegamers.net/whatsnew.html) it is not in fact the TRUE start page and may no longer function after the next site revision!  Just use the link above and you will always be getting the most current and freshest version of Combat Mission HQ.  Thanks!

FROM ALL OF US HERE AT COMBAT MISSION HQ

May You and Yours Have A

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

10:10 EST

So have you been naughty or nice this year?  Doesn't matter as we have stuffed your stockings all the same!  Coming down the chimney today we have a big bag of Holiday fun for you.

Leading the sleigh team we have an excellent After Action Report penned by Leland J.  Tankersley.  This German view point  Chance Encounter report is presented in complete form and goes for 26 turns.  Check it out in the After Action Reports section with a click right HERE.

It came,  it devoured and it was a total BLAST to work on!  Heavy Metal's final installment (page 5) is now up with the 8 more screenshots and you can rock with it one last time by following this LINK.

Be sure to check out both of our ongoing Did You Know and Quick Tactics messages as they have both been updated as well!

02:20 EST

Good morning everyone.  We can't think of any better way to start the day off than with a nice juicy update! So here it comes...

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so sink your teeth into a new Artillery Quick Tactic now up in the New Features section.  Head on over to view it by using this LINK.  Look above to view a new Did You Know.

Also,  don't forget that expired copies of both of the above features are now available in the Archives section.  Click THIS to jump right there.

Now that breakfast is done lets skip right to desert and for today we have a little confection known as Heavy Metal page 4 now on the menu.  Served with 7 new screenshots this is one treat you wont soon forget.  Order it up yourself by clicking HERE.

13:30 EST

Good afternoon!  Have you been getting your daily recommended amount of Combat Mission action?  If not then be sure to stop into the Heavy Metal section as page 3 has just been added with another batch of armor fortified screenshots!  Click right HERE to see more.

Yesterday saw the final posting of Battle Reports for the Classic Alpha Battle.   Today,  we give you another added treat.  After long hours of searching we were able to locate Steve Grammont's comments on the whole battle that were originally posted on the BTS Forum.  Some nice wrap up commentary there and you can find it (along with all 41 complete turns) in the Archive section.  As always,  you can use this LINK or the Nav-button above to get there.

Another new Artillery Quick Tactic has been added into the New Features area.  You can see it by selecting THIS.

13:30 EST

Is it time for another update already?  It sure is!  Today is a day of continuance and conclusions.  First off,  we continue in our award winning presentation: Heavy Metal.   Page two has been posted with another 7 screenshots for you to drool over.  Catch them all from the button above or with this LINK.

When it was first released 4 months ago,  it captured our imaginations and wonder.  We watched as two opponents matched wits and ability on the field of battle.  To this day,  it is still the single greatest After Action Report ever written about Combat Mission.  Now for the first time ever,  all 41 turns of the Classic Alpha Battle AAR are available in one location! Get over to the Archives section and and see for yourselves why this was and is a classic! Click on the Nav-button above to go straight there or you may also click HERE.

And so it begins...We warned you but you couldn't stay away. HEAVY METAL is here!  What is it?  It is over 30 screenshots of a huge Combat Mission Armor vs. Armor battle that was created and photographed especially for you,  the loyal viewers!  Many never before seen vehicles have been included in this special weeklong gallery and it also represents the largest all vehicle battle shots yet posted.  So get your motor running and get ready for some true HEAVY METAL. You may click on the button above or use this LINK to get there.  Each day this week we will be posting 7 new shots so keep coming back for more!

One other thing we have added tonight is a final version of the player submitted Names list.  These are names that we will be forwarding to BTS for inclusion into COMBAT MISSION as potential unit leader names.  Check them out HERE or use the button above.

23:30 EST

In a recent thread over at BTS's Combat Mission Forum,  my esteemed college posed a little science question and promised the lucky trivia wiz a Picture of their choosing.  Well guess what Doug Beman?  YOU GOT IT!!!!  Let me enlighten the masses on what Doug asked for,  he said:

"Actually, if you're going to make a CM picture and post it, why not create a shot of 3 or 4 German tanks (Panthers, or JpzIV/70s) sitting hull-down atop a low ridge, overlooking a river valley/crossroads littered with Allied vehicles. I think such a "classic German tank image" would go over very well."

Ok,  sounds good to us!

True to our word,  take a look at this..                                .Click to Enlarge

More,  oh my,  much much more to come.....SOON!

18:50 EST

HOT NEWS!!! Although it was originally posted yesterday,  It got kind of buried in amongst the normal clutter of the forum.  Therefore we have Steve Grammont's (of Big Time Software)  post,  in its entirety,  regarding the current status of Combat Mission and the plan for the weeks to come.  Click HERE to read the post.

20:20 EST

Well,  if its Thursday night then it must be time for a new site look!  This time around we have tried to tone down the bright colors while also increasing the overall contrast of the site.  Please drop us a line (you can use the email links above) and let us know what you think!

We have also added a second page to every ones favorite web activity,  Flame War!  This time around we take a peek at a true KING of the battlefield.  Head on over to the New Features area to see MORE.

Until we can find a more permanent home from them the After Action Area is now hosting Stand Alone Movie Files.  These are movies from a single turn of play and will highlight something interesting or outright spectacular.  You load this text file into the Demo just like a normal PBEM file.  Tonight we have a new movie of Last Defense from Zach Major and it shows off a very impressive long range shot.  I have also added Doug Bemans earlier offering to this section.  Check them both out by clicking HERE.

You will also notice a new Nav-button up above called Submissions.  Please go there to find helpful and required guidelines to follow before you submit any material to Combat Mission HQ.

18:30 EST

We just wanted to take a minute and say thanks to all who have recently written in with comments and suggestions about the site!  We read every message and as many of you can attest to,  we strive to answer them promptly and act on them whenever possible.  Ok,  now that you are all nice sweetened up how about some more FLAME WAR!?! Burn through the link HERE or above in the New Features area to see more of this hot topic...

Some great information was released today by Steve Grammant (from BTS) in regard to Combat Mission vehicle models on the Big Time Software Discussion Forum.  You can find a link to the forum in (where else!?) our Links area.  Use the Nav-button above or click on this LINK to be taken right there.

It appears that there are no shortages of  heroes in Combat Mission.  Tonight we bring to you one hungry tank crew courtesy of  Mr. Wild Bill  himself.  Pay your respects in the Heroes Corner section by clicking THIS.

22:00 EST

In honor of all the recent activity over on the Combat Mission forum we have decided to post our own  FLAME WAR!  Check out this LINK to the New Features area to see what we mean!  And ummm,  it's not what you think,  then again....It may be! ;-)

Another first on Combat Mission HQ  is a Chance Encounter movie file sent in by Doug Beman.  Keep a watchful eye just South of the church near the end of the turn.  It's not particularly brave or heroic but it does prove that Combat Mission will cater to just about any play style you can think up and reward  you appropriately.  Save THIS as a text file and then load it into the Demo as a PBEM game and use the password: greynym

Also tonight,  fresh from the oven is another offering from the creme filled Alpha Battle After Action Report between Fionn and Martin.  Get your fill in the Archive section or just park your mouse and click on THIS.

21:00 EST

Sorry for the late update!  Trust us,  it isn't that we have nothing new to show you,  far from it in fact.  If anything,  the hardest part is choosing WHAT to show you!  So,  as a way of saying thanks to all of our loyal viewers,  we bring you something that wasn't originally going to be posted until later in the week.  Without further delay please make haste to the New Features area where you will find a fresh entry entitled: Improved Artillery!  You will love this and you can get to it from the button above or right HERE.

22:25 EST

Good evening soldiers!  As promised earlier there are some great things afoot here at CMHQ.  Take a gander up above and you will see that the Heroes Corner section has gone live!  This area will be devoted to screenshots and stories of amazing feats of  heroism performed by units in Combat Mission.  Drop in to see our first two inductees.  You can stand tall with the heroes by clicking on the button above or with this handy LINK.

Want to see your Picture on Combat Mission HQ?  It's easy,  just read the picture submission guidelines HERE then send your best screenshots to the email addresses posted at the top of this page!  We are now accepting pictures for all areas including the brand new Heroes Corner section!  You can send the picture to either one of us or even both to double your fun!

20:00 EST

Welcome back to the site where everyone knows your name!  Tonight, as promised,  we have a ton of new things to talk about, so lets get to it!  Leading off,  we have another 5 turns available for the Alpha Battle After Action Report bringing us up to turn 25.  These later turns are great examples of  Fog of War in play as both Fionn and Martin dramatically see and judge things differently.  You can watch how it all plays out in the Archives section above or by clicking on THIS.

If you were paying attention then you should have noticed a new button layout above.  That's right,  the old Screenshot Gallery has been divided into two new sections.  Gallery 1 has all the original pictures posted while the new Gallery 2 has three all new Winter pictures fresh off the presses!  You can get to them from the link above or just click HERE.  Look for this section to grow considerably in the days to come!  You have been warned...

We said tonight would be big and to prove it we have another New Feature available to view.  As  mentioned last night,  Combat Mission now has colored tracers for the different forces engaged and you can click on this LINK to see them or use the handy button above!

Take your time and enjoy as we have plenty of new and better things coming your way!  ;-)

Need a break from all the forum action?  Well,  we have just the cure!  First off,  a special surprise.  Now for the first time in edited form,  we present to you the  November 9th Chat Transcript with BTS's own Steve Grammont.  There are some real gems of info buried in there and to make it easier on the ole' peepers we have edited out all the Spam,  System Messages and Side Conversations that make IRC such a treat!  You can view this masterpiece yourself in the Articles section above or by clicking on this handy LINK.

Also new tonight,  we have another Article from CMHQ's own Fionn Kelly.  This time around he dives into the intricacies of  Combat Mission,  3D modeling and the limitations of Hexes.  Very informative and a good read!  Check it out in the Articles section as well by clicking HERE.

Big day ahead for tomorrow so be sure and stop back!!!

Now that you have been good and voted,  we have a little election day reward for you!  It was big,  it was bloody and its almost over!  Turn 11 and Movie of  Last Defense is now up.  You can see all the action by clicking the Battle Report Button upstairs or right HERE!

Site News!  We will be posting a new section in the near future and it will cater to all those Heroic Moments you love to brag about!  That's right,  we will have a Heroes Corner sectionWe will be accepting submissions shortly (Don't send them yet!) and I will post the guidelines just as soon as we iron them out!  Basically it will be a showplace for units that have gone above and beyond the call of duty as evidenced by a screenshot of their Unit Kill Screen with some nice action going on in the background.  More on this later!

Recently in the forums there has been some talk on to how Combat Mission will handle urban engagements and what these fights might look like.  Well speculate no more because we now have 3 new KILLER shots taken of  just such a fight!  Pay special attention to the backgrounds! Hint hint! You will find these in a new "City Fight" page  of the Screenshot Gallery area which you can get to either from the button above or more directly by simply clicking THIS!

12:00 EST

THIS IS HOT!!!!  Big Time Software is giving you the public a chance to weigh in on the decision to either Release Combat Mission without TCP/IP (with a patch made available soon after) or delay the release and ship with TCP/IP intact!  TGN has posted a way for you to vote and BTS will be tallying the votes and making a final call in the days to come.  You can read the entire Message from BTS and VOTE by clicking on this LINK!!!   EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS AND GET VOTING PEOPLE!!!

19:30 EST

As promised,  we have just posted the latest installment of Fionn and Lee's Last Defense demo battle.  And as always,  you find the good stuff by clicking on the Battle Reports Button above or click right on ME!

16:00 EST

Welcome back!  We missed you.  So far today we have tweaked some of the pages to go a little easier on those of you that run in a screen resolution of 800x600.  Most notably the Gallery looks much better.  We had to remove the text descriptions,  however if you leave the cursor on the picture (at least on page 1) a text box will pop up and give you the description.  There are no descriptions to the pics on pages 2 and 3 because they weren't our pictures and they pretty much speak for themselves.  Check back later today for your daily installment of AAR fun!

01:20 EST

Nah Mom,  we don't wanna sleep!!!  Who needs sleep when there is a NEW SECTION to go up?!?  This time around we now introduce to you a LINKS Section.  Not many in there yet but it will grow in time...

20:40 EST

Hello!  Glad to see that on this wonderful December evening you have chosen to visit us here instead of going outside!  Wise choice because our current Last Defense AAR is now up to turn 9 and you can go right to the AAR area or download the Movie from here!

Visited our New Features Section lately?  No,  well be sure to drop in and have a look around.  For those of you with StuGs this may be particularly enlightening!  You'll see... ;)

12:30 EST

Just made some more cosmetic changes is all!  Links on this page are Italic now and the date  Date Stamps are now errr....Well,  look up 1 inch and you can see for yourself! :) Like always,  MORE TO COME!!!

23:40 EST

Now then,  with all the excitement that we are sure the earlier news caused you probably thought we would forget all about Turn 8,  right?  Wrong!  We got your AAR fix right HERE and of course the accompanying Movie is up as well!  One last treat for all.  BTS recently posted a shot of the Chance Encounter Map with fog effects.  Be aware that this picture (like any screenshot) may divulge unit info if you are engaged in a 'Blind' game so exercise caution,  but it is quite nice. You can see it all by clicking ME.  Enjoy it my friends! :)

20:00 EST

Good evening all! Just been doing some general 'upkeep' on the Site.  It seems people like the new Back In Black Background,  so we have gone through and upgraded all the pages to this new look plus we have tried to tweak the other colors to be much more legible and clear.  Suggestions and Comments are always welcome and appreciated.  Ok,  now on to the good stuff.

First off,  we are debuting yet another new Area!  NEW FEATURES will highlight and discuss new improvements and additions to Combat Mission that have been incorporated since the original Beta Demo release.  Last night we made mention to the new GROUP MOVE functionality that has been incorporated into Combat Mission. So without further ado,  we bring you Four new screenshots of this feature in Action!  You can get to these either by clicking on the New Features button above or right HERE.

Great stuff and we will be keeping you up-to-date with tons more info in the days to come!

Take a look into the Archive Section for a nice little Bonus surprise in the form of  Fionn Kelly's wonderful Combat Mission Preview.  This is a great overview of Combat Mission and I  had totally forgotten just how many excellent screenshots this article had,  including these two eye feasts:

Just another Rainy Night!                                                                       CAEN!!!  CAEN!!!  CAEN!!!!   Errr   ummm  Star Trek reference!

Of special note in this Preview (aside from that fact Fionn blatantly quotes me without credit! ;) ) is a partial German Unit list which I have reproduced for your pleasure over HERE. Enjoy my friends,  enjoy!

This update was mostly just for maintenance. Fixed a bad link in the Turn 6 AAR (Thanks for the catch Dave!) and have been just tweaking the "look and feel" of the site.  I would also like to know if you like the new all Black Background,  please email me  HERE  with your comments on it.  There will be a more substantial update later tonight.
