Riesberg

American – Riesberg
Setup

For the purposes of this AAR, I have assumed the personality of Capt. Ted Turner (no relation to the obnoxious one in Atlanta) J, unit A-0.  I’ve only played this scenario one time on each side so I do not have the battlefield memorized or anything.  It appears to me that this scenario is not balanced, the Americans have too much fire power.  We’ll see if that opinion holds up at the end of the day.

Setup

Diary entry – (4/29/45)  I am about to embark on another mission:  this one is  to clear out another small hamlet in Western Germany.  This one is called Reisberg I think. We’ve been having a pretty easy time of it lately.  The Jerries don’t seem to have much fight in them.  Already this morning, our Battalion has taken several towns without losing any men.  Thank God!  It appears this war is almost over.

Even so, not all of them are surrendering.  3rd battalion lost a bunch of good men yesterday.  As usual, the feather merchants in Intel don’t have much to tell us so we will go in shooting first and ask questions later.   We have to assume this village is defended.  Fortunately, the company is now at full strength and even better, we’ve got a platoon of Shermans for back up.

My plan is not to charge down the road like a darn fool but to come from a direction where we cannot be expected.  Also, we’ll keep our entire force concentrated on the right side of the battlefield so that when we hit him, we knock him down ASAP.  Then it will be time for the infantry to do the dirty work of clearing out the houses one by one.

In detail the plan is to first, advance the infantry find out if they have any AT guns hidden in that side of the town.  Dog platoon with cover our flank on the left.  Charlie platoon will make sure the woods are clear.  Baker platoon will probably be the first over the hill in the center and the green troops of Fox Platoon will be on the right flank.  Lt. Jared’s 105 spotting team will stay with me near the middle initially.  Next, we’ll have the tanks crest the hill and knock down a couple of buildings with their HE.  While that’s happening, we’ll get our heavy weapon teams set up to cover our advance.  After every thing is ready, we’ll charge and overwhelm them in the small houses. Ideally, we’ll have 3 or 4 squads firing at every one of theirs.

I have a lot of confidence in my men.  I just hope their commander is up to the job.

Everyone is to the right of the road.  I expect to stay on this side of the battlefield until I’m in the town.
