German Commander - Fionn Kelly

Turn 1:

Orders Phase:

My orders conform to the defensive outline I briefed you on previously. Basically the skirmish line is taking up positions as are the MLR units which weren’t able to set up in their preferred positions due to the limitations of the setup zones to which I agreed earlier.

Action Phase:

The only points of note are as follows:

1.      Direct tank fire from 4 tanks has destroyed the two buildings my 150mm FO's were hiding in. I had banked on their destruction by direct fire HE taking at least 90 seconds or so thus giving me time to withdraw them before the building collapsed but within 45 seconds both buildings were shattered and my FO's lay dead within the rubble. There goes one major plank of my defence. Still, any defence which relies on only one factor for its strength is doomed to defeat anyway so their loss isn’t terminal. It is just a tad uncomfortable.

2.      My two Elite Squads make it into their forward positions and immediately spy American forces advancing towards them over Open Terrain. The American forces are advancing at a walking pace. Why don’t they RUN over the open terrain wherein they are most vulnerable? This sort of slow, linear American-doctrinal advance always confuses me. I have seen excellent players using this tactic time and again and suffering horrendous losses for doing so and have often tried to understand why they don’t see such an elementary failing and correct it. Ah well, I’ll ambush Murray here within a turn or two.

3.      There is a generalised advance. I have identified 5 obvious routes of advance. I can assume a company is allocated to each advance so that accounts for 5 companies. Assuming there’s an advance in some wooded terrain that I can’t see I can assume that Murray is disposing two Battalions in his front-line and will probably be backing up each of the three sectors ( right flank, centre, left flank) with another Company. All in all that accounts for three Battalions. Add to that the tanks I’ve seen so far and it seems safe to say that at least two platoons of tanks are supporting the thrusts.

So, from the few glimpses I’ve seen so far I’ve postulated a believable American plan of advance and, until such time as I see evidence causing me to change my mind  I will use this TO&E and assessment of enemy intentions and planning to base my decisions.
